Product Update: ActivTrak Agent Version Requirements and Update Guide

Applies to: All ActivTrak accounts using Windows and macOS devices

ActivTrak requires a minimum agent version of 9.0 on all monitored Windows and macOS devices. This requirement is part of our ongoing security hardening program and applies to all accounts.

Beginning October 1, 2026, devices running agent versions below 9.0 will be automatically updated on a rolling schedule. Any device not updated to agent 9.0 or later by August 1, 2027, will not have its data processed by ActivTrak.

This article explains how to check your current agent versions, whether your account requires manual action, how to update manually before your scheduled date, what to expect from the automatic update and what to do if your devices run an unsupported operating system.

Why this is required

Agent 9.0 introduces enhanced security hardening not available in earlier versions. The minimum version requirement ensures all accounts benefit from these improvements. After the enforcement date, we will no longer support older agent versions.

Minimum version requirement

Requirement Detail
Minimum agent version 9.0 or later
Applies to All Windows and Mac devices running the ActivTrak agent
Enforcement date August 1, 2027
Effect at enforcement ActivTrak will stop processing data from agents below 9.0

Important: After July 1, 2027, ActivTrak will discard any message from an agent below version 9.0, and the lost data will not be retrievable.

Supported and deprecated operating systems

This section answers one question: can your operating system run agent 9.0?

ActivTrak supports the agent on operating systems still supported by the manufacturer (Microsoft or Apple). Devices on those versions will be auto-updated to Agent 9.0 on your account's scheduled date and require no operating-system change. Devices on operating systems that cannot run Agent 9.0 require an operating-system upgrade.

Operating Systems that cannot run Agent 9.0

  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Microsoft Windows 8

Does my account need to take manual action?

ActivTrak will handle most accounts automatically on their scheduled update date, and they won't need any action. However, some accounts run agent versions that can't auto-update and require manual installation.

Case 1: Your account has agent versions that cannot auto-update

Some older agent versions don't support automatic updates. If your account includes devices on one of these versions, those devices won't update automatically. You must update them manually using the steps in this article.

Windows agent versions that cannot auto-update: Any version below 8.0.12.0

macOS agent versions that cannot auto-update: Any version below 8.2.11.0

If any of your devices are below the minimum auto-update version, follow the manual update steps below.

Case 2: all other accounts

If your devices are on an auto-updatable version below 9.0, ActivTrak will update them automatically on your account's scheduled date. No action is required, though you may update early using the manual steps if you prefer.

How your account will be updated

ActivTrak is updating accounts in groups based on device count, starting October 1, 2026. You will receive an advance email notification 7 days prior to the update.

Important: Users on monitored devices will not see any notification. The agent update process does not display any alerts or prompts to users on monitored devices. Only the ActivTrak account administrator receives email notifications about the update schedule. If you need to communicate the update to your IT team or device users, you will need to do so separately.

You have three options:

Option 1 — Update your devices now (recommended for IT-managed environments)

You can push the agent update to your devices at any time before your scheduled date using the manual steps below. This is the recommended approach if your account includes agents that cannot auto-update. Updating early won't affect ActivTrak functionality or historical data.

Option 2 — Let ActivTrak handle it automatically

On your account's scheduled update date, any devices still running an agent below version 9.0 will automatically update to the latest available version. Some customers may need to update their RMM/MDM settings if a specific version was targeted, to ensure devices don't reinstall to a lower version after auto-update. Devices on agent versions that cannot auto-update (Situation 1 above) are not included in this automatic process and must be updated manually.

Option 3: Contact support for special circumstances

If you are on signature support and cannot accommodate the update on its scheduled date due to an internal change process, maintenance window or other constraint, contact the support team before your scheduled date to discuss your situation. Our team will work with you on a path that fits your needs. See more below.

How to check your current agent versions

Before updating manually, confirm which devices in your account are running a sub-9.0 agent.

You can find which agent versions your organization's devices are currently using by logging in to the web app and navigating to Settings >  Users & Groups > Computer Agents.

How to update the agent manually

Use these steps to update agents on your own schedule before your account's automatic update date.

To learn more about manual upgrading, see our documentation here.

Windows 7 and Windows 8 devices

Agents 9.0 and above are not compatible with Windows 7 or Windows 8. Devices running these operating systems cannot be updated to the minimum required version and are not included in the standard automatic update rollout.

What this means for your account:

ActivTrak will no longer support data ingestion from Windows 7 or Windows 8 (which cannot update to Agent 9.0) as of August 1, 2027.

What you need to do:

In most cases, moving off Windows 7 or Windows 8 requires replacing hardware, not just upgrading the operating system. Windows 7 and Windows 8 hardware typically can't run Windows 10 or Windows 11 because of hardware compatibility constraints. We recommend beginning your hardware planning as soon as possible.

You have until August 1, 2027, to transition affected devices to a supported operating system that will support agent 9.0 or higher.

What to expect from the automatic update

All impacted accounts will receive a 7 day advance notification before their scheduled update, confirming the date the update will be applied automatically. No action is required to proceed with the update on that date.

If you prefer to manage the transition on your own timeline, you can update manually at any point before your scheduled date using the steps above, or contact the support team to discuss your situation.
